If you haven't already heard, we are having some fun with basketball in our classroom. Each day, students are given the scores from one of the games from the NCAA tournament. BUT...they are only given the scores for the first and second halves. Students need to use the strategies we've been learning in math about double-digit addition to figure out the final scores and determine the winner. Strategies include number talk and using base-10 blocks.) Students then need to use subtraction strategies to find out how many points the winning team won by. To make it more personal for the class, each student chose 2 teams to follow. They're excited to see whose teams won.
On Wednesday, students played "restaurant" in math. We created a menu together as a class, then split into pairs. One person was the waiter, the other the customer. The customer was given a gift card so they knew how much to spend. The waiter had to figure out the total and how much change the customer would get back. The class had so much fun, they requested the menu be put on my blog so they could play at home. Here it is!
